FLAMENCO GUITAR
Vasco Hernández and contemporary flamenco guitar
Flamenco guitar is tradition, rhythm, memory and an inexhaustible field of creation. In the work of Vasco Hernández, it is both a cultural inheritance and a living contemporary language.
A language with deep roots
The guitar occupies a central place in flamenco. It sustains singing and dancing, defines rhythm and harmony, and has also developed an extraordinary solo repertoire. Its characteristic techniques — such as rasgueado, picado, alzapúa, tremolo and golpe — are not decorative effects: they organise musical discourse and give each flamenco form its identity.
Knowledge of the palos, compás, phrasing and relationship between tension and release is essential. Technique acquires meaning when it serves expression, and virtuosity becomes valuable when it reveals a musical idea.
Composer and solo performer
Vasco Hernández approaches flamenco guitar from the dual perspective of performer and composer. His music respects the expressive codes of flamenco while seeking its own architecture, sound and narrative. The result is a repertoire in which precision, melodic imagination and emotional depth coexist.
His career of more than three decades includes solo performances, ensemble work and appearances across Europe and the Americas. This international experience has strengthened a musical identity capable of communicating beyond linguistic and geographical borders.
Tradition in the present
Contemporary flamenco guitar does not break with its past; it converses with it. Every generation receives techniques, forms and aesthetic principles, then reshapes them through new compositions, new listening habits and encounters with other musical worlds.
Within that continuum, Vasco Hernández develops a personal contribution centred on composition, concert performance and the project Noctambulosis, where flamenco roots meet an intimate and contemporary vision.
